How to pronounce French

French spelling becomes much easier when you recognise a few recurring sound patterns. Listen first, keep the rhythm smooth and resist pronouncing every final letter.

1

Shape the vowels French uses most

Nasal vowels resonate through the nose, while u is made with rounded lips.

2

Use a light French r and quiet endings

Make r near the back of the throat. Many final consonants remain silent.

3

Keep the flow smooth

French gives each phrase an even rhythm. A normally silent consonant may link to the next vowel.
